History and origin: The origin of Achimenes (Magic Flower) is located between northern Mexico and Brazil; it is even found in northern Argentina as well as in Jamaica. There these grow on steep slopes that are rich in humus and in crevices. The first specimens were imported to Europe in 1778. Quite a number of cross-breedings took place around 1850. Botany: About 50 varieties belong to the genus Achimenes, which consists mostly of hairy herbs with upright growth. The stems seldom branch, and the leaves are opposite and stemmed. The funnel-like flowers consist of five petals grown together with a long floral tube and tilted peduncles. Small scaly rhizomes grow underground. Care tips: Achimenes are available in many different colours; however they are hard to find in retail. They are one of the few summer potted plants that have a long flowering time (a duration of six to eight weeks) and a high tolerance to light. The plants are best placed in a bright but not sunny window at 15 to 20°C. Direct solar radiation leads to the discolouring of the leaves. Some varieties are also suitable for protected balconies or terraces in the summer months. |
