Episcia, Alsobia        
 

Episcia

Grows in natural locations in dense (rain)forests with high humidity and without direct sunlight. The leaves are an important part of the plant: There many different colours and leaf patterns, most of which are hairy. Although the flowers are quite small they are very pretty!

Alsobia

Used to belong to the Episcias, but is now categorised under its own genus, which contains two varieties: A. punctata and A. dianthiflora. The flowers of both types are intensely fringed.

Unlike Episcias, only a single shoot grows out from the nodes.

 

 

Origin:

Middle and South America, particularly from Mexico to Brazil.

Use:

House plant; very attractive due to its dainty flowers and the interesting leaf patterns and colouring.

Plants potted in hanging containers can grow to an impressive size.

Flowering time:

Spring until fall.

Location:

Bright, but no full sun. Episcias grow in light shade under high trees in its native countries.

Episcia and Alsobia do not tolerate temperatures below 15°C.

Care:

The plant does not have any particular requirements, however likes to be sprayed occasionally.
