Kohleria

Different from the African violet, for example, Kohlerias have rhizomes that grow underground and are used to store nutrients which help the plant survive through difficult periods. Water scarcity or other unfavourable conditions are therefore not a problem for the plant. When the aboveground parts of the plant die back this means it is time for it to have a rest period. As soon as the conditions become more favourable again, new shoots are formed directly from the rhizomes. The rhizomes are located at the stem’s base, dense under the soil's surface.

Growing conditions in winter gardens or on the windowsill are seldom very difficult for the plant. A well cared for Kohleria does not need a rest period – and it is nice to know that this plant can not be killed too easily. On the contrary, Kohlerias are one of the most vigorous plants there are. In fact it is rather too easy to care for them and in more tropical climates they would be considered weeds.

Cut your Kohleria back occasionally. This way the plant will become better branched and it will develop a fuller appearance. New shoots will grow from the base of the plant and with a little bit of patience, it is possible to grow exceptionally large plants.

The requirements for light, temperature, water, substrate and fertilisation are very similar to that of the African violet. The differences are in the potting and propagating techniques.

There are about 65 species of Kohleria, in addition to a larger number of hybrids. Unfortunately, the hybrids are hard to find. A related variety is Koellikeria.
